Movie Night with the New TV

The classic movies have a strange place in my heart that goes back to my film class during my undergrad days. Monday and Wednesdays were spent learning about mise-en-scene and the importance of lighting. My Fridays, however, were spent sleeping in the back of the theater while movies like Alfred Hitchcock and Robocop played (you try watching movies in the dark during a 9am Friday class!).

So #59 on the 101 list is to watch 25 classic movie which I started last night with a showing of Alfred Hitchcock's North by Northwest.

The story is about an advertising executive mistaken for a spy and a murderer, chased across the country while falling in love with a mysterious woman. Not exactly the shoot-em-up spy movies like James Bond or the Bourne Identity but it has a charm on its own.

For instance, I did notice that there were some action scenes that didn't contain any music when I was expecting to hear it. Emotions can be influenced by the use and type of music used in the scene. That wasn't the case here. And it worked really well because the silence adds to the suspense. The moments before the crop duster came kept building up the expectation that something was about to happen. It was just a matter of when.

And a random cinematic term: From Wikipedia
"A MacGuffin (sometimes McGuffin) is a plot device that motivates the characters or advances the story, but the details of which are of little or no importance otherwise." In the case of North by Northwest, the MacGuffin was the film containing government secrets.

$25 Challenge - What I Learned

1. It's not very difficult to keep on a fugal food budget if it ever became necessary.

I even managed to stick under the allotted budget. But I say that as someone who has the access and ability to go to a discount grocery store. There are some people who don't have access to a car or do not live close to a store so that they can keep on a sound and healthy budget.

2. Even if it's possible to have a $25 budget, it's not something I would what to do.

I was never really starving during this whole week. I was a little hungry at the beginning, but that was more because there was a dramatic cut in my portions. My biggest problem was the lack of quality selection. After awhile, a person can get quite sick of noodles.

3. Convenience can and will supersede healthy.

I had a lot of starch and carbs in my diet (bread, noodles, potatoes, etc). This is usually what my diet consist of before the week but a least I also had the option of grabbing a quick salad or fresh fruit if I was in the mood.

4. Tools of the trade are important.

I need to invest in a better spatula. While I don't think melted bits of plastic from a cheap spatula will kill me, I also don't think it's a part of a healthy, well-balanced diet.

5. Coffee is the nectar from the Gods.

I'm not addicted!.... (right) I just missed my coffee.

6. Lack of sugar will indeed drop the weight.

I've had more than one person tell me that they lost a ton of weight once they cut down on the sugar. This proved true to me when the only sweets I had was a brownie this past week. I managed to lose a total of 4 pounds during that short period of time. I'm not sure if this will change anything in the future since I do have a huge sweet tooth. We will have to see.

7. Food is a very important part of social interaction.

Until I had to stop doing it, I didn't realize just how much I socialized with people while munching on a bag of popcorn or dining out for dinner or enjoying snacks during a party. People are very willing to offer food in exchange for interaction and I had to turn down offered food so many times this past week.

$25 Challenge - From the Notebook: Day 5 & 6

November 24, 2008 11:57am

Cornflakes again. I'm not even a big fan of cornflakes either. Next time, I'm getting my cheerios...

I am a bit hungry so I'm going to go tear into my lunch (another hamburger patty and sweet potatoes). It's 12:00! Lunchtime!

November 24, 2008 7:54pm

The lunch with meat and sweet potatoes didn't do so well for my stomach. To calm it, I had a glass of milk and some toast for dinner and some corn once I was feeling better. I should probably work on some school work and watch that movie before it needs to go back...

****************

November 25, 2008 9:23am

Cornflakes and milk for breakfast again (notice a pattern?). I also made a turkey sandwich for lunch that I am sure I will enjoy. Right now, I'm about to fall asleep here at my desk. I'm not sure why but it's probably a combination of a late night, no coffee, and diet.

Let's see if I can finish my reading for class and get this quiz done for Forensic accounting class (if I feel up to it, that is).

November 25, 2008 11:02pm

I had a busy night running around in East Hampton so there was little time for dinner. Usually in situations like this, I would grab some quick fast food at Burger King or McD's but I wanted to keep under budget and managed some time to make a quick meal. (Busy hands are happy hands)

So, I did manage my very first attempt at making french toast. It wasn't too bad but I wish I had more than eggs and milk (like cinnamon or sugar) to flavor the bread. I might even make more in the future.

Only one more day and, man, I will be glad when it's over!

$25 Challenge - From the Notebook: Day 4

November 23, 2008 4:13pm

Caching day! I haven't cached in awhile so it was good to get out to the trails. It was a bit cold but that's usually the best time for caching (no one else besides cachers want to be in this weather).

This morning was corn flakes and milk (again) for breakfast and a peanut butter sandwich for a trail snack and for lunch. I think the consistency is getting to me. I also had to decide whether or not I had enough bread for the rest of the week for me to make toast for breakfast. I decided 'no.'

November 23, 2008 9:32pm

I was hungry at dinner (Sundays are my 'veg and eat' days) so I prepared a bigger meal than usual: a hamburger patty with bread slices as buns, a side of noodles with a little corn for flavor, and a glass of milk. I do, however, think my stomach is protesting the noodles at the moment (urp!).

64. Dunbar's 'weekly summary' - (5/5) Completed!

Ah, the sweet relief of finishing the last of the homework quizzes.

Now, I just need to stress out on the final exam.

sigh....

The class was fun and a part of me deep down (waaaayyyyy deep down) will miss all the work and bonding we did to get this semester done. The other part of me just likes the idea of sleeping.

Anyways, the last of my contributions to the weekly summary:

WBR> im a morning person too, so my brain is about to shut off
SHR > your brain is on a timer?
WBR> right, it turns into a pumpkin at midnight

*******
YOUR BRAIN ON TAX

WBR> I am not sure if this has happened to you, yet: We were at a bar on Saturday night to celebrate a friend's birthday. As I was drinking the margarita, I overheard someone said the word "character" and the first few things showed up in mind were: 1231, 1244, 1245, ltcg....
SHR> What exactly was in that margarita?
WBR> LOL, I had no idea what the bartender put in it, but it was a good margarita. Doubted that he took Dunbar's class before :)

$25 Challenge - From the notebook: Day 2 and 3

November 21, 2008 8:43am

Today is Friday Breakfast. This is a tradition that started when I first came to the company and has since been a sacred ritual in our department. Every Friday morning, we take turns bringing in breakfast for everyone that participates. This morning, there's pumpkin bread, bagels, and croissants.... mmmmm croissants.

I had a bowl of corn flakes and milk.

Someone was just complaining about the selection this week and I almost wanted to tell her off about selection and to stop complaining about what you don't have and enjoy what you do have: like pumpkin bread and croissants.

November 21, 2008 11:12am

There's a slight pickle in my plans to do this challenge on this particular week- Everyone is talking about food for Thanksgiving...

November 21, 2008 9:31pm

I made a complete mess of the kitchen. Hamburger and noodles are thrown in every which way but I have completed a meal. It was a combo of hamburger meat, noodles and egg with a little salt for flavor. Overall, not bad. I also made some hamburgers for future meals.

All is cleaned up and I am ready to relax.

********************************

November 22, 2008 10:28am

No breakfast today.

I woke up too late in the day to a point where I can wait until lunch. I did weigh myself and I lost 3 lbs in 48 hours. The last time I lost that much weight in such little time was when I didn't sleep for three straight nights.

I was surprised about this. I thought I would be gaining more weight before I would lose it with all the carbs and fat as well as the water I've been chugging down like I've been in the desert for a month. Then again, maybe it's not so surprising. I've loaded my diet with carbs and fat before- now I'm eating less of it. And I haven't had sugar in two days. That would probably count for something. I guess it comes down to control. I could scarf down those leftover candy corn sitting on my desk right now but people know that I'm doing this so cheating doesn't seem right.

November 22, 2008 11:54pm

Whew! Just finished my last tax quiz! Now it's down to the final.

As for the rest of today, I had the leftover meat/noodle combo before I left for a get together with friends.

I also did have a brownie ('no' was not going to be Sam's answer) but only if I paid for it. $19.04 adds now to $19.54.

As for dinner, it was the last of the hamburger noodle with half a can of creamed corn. yum! Tomorrow is a day of caching!

$25 Challenge - From the Notebook: T minus 1 day

November 19, 2008 1:50pm

I took a longer lunch to head to Aldi and get some of my things. It's not complete but it's a good start. The receipt totals to $17.69 which I thought was very good until I realized I didn't get spaghetti (got the sauce) and the cashier didn't ring up the eggs. Good price wise, but one can't rely on good foutune (lol $1.35 is good fortune) so it's got to be counted. This makes a total of $19.04 with a $5-6 leway for anything I'd like to add for spices/treats and yes, even the spaghetti.

November 19, 2008 9:55pm

I just got back from my parent's house after a large meal from Angelico's. We spent more on this meal than our budget for the next week on wine, entree and dessert. It can become easy to rampt up a bill as I catch up with my mother on the latest. $55 to be exact- on special.

No fine dining tomorrow, that's for sure.

64. Dunbar's 'weekly summary' (4/5)

The weeks are coming down!

This was our last week of new material on corporation distributions (Just sounds fun, doesn't it?) and this week is review of the semester. A week off for Thanksgiving and then... finals!

I'll be spending a good amount of time trying to figure out what I'll be doing once these classes are over and another amount of time trying to survive til that time comes.

But until then, my contribution to the weekly summary:

SECOND CAREER FOR DUNBAR? THINK I WILL STICK WITH TAX.

MRY> maybe.... I get lonely in my cubical at work
ZWI> we still owe you the salon doors
MRY> lol! right! you do!
MRY> and the western music
ZWI> i didn't promise the latter
MRY> but they kinda go hand in hand
ZWI> no no - you charter somebody else for that
MRY> how can one go through saloon doors with out the bwah bwah dah
WEB > not me :)
ZWI> you can sing right?
WEB > only choral music
MRY> maybe we can get Dunbar to do it
WEB > that's a good idea
WEB > she can dance too :)
MRY> showgirl at the saloon. I like it

Change in the list

Towards the end of the list, I was fishing for ideas as one can see in the following:

94. Floss everyday for a month

That, I must say, is one of the most boring things I probably could have come up with. So in place of that I changed to another task:

94. Do a past life reading

See? Much more interesting. Whether I believe in such stuff like past lives is not as relevant as to what my subconcious mind THINKS was a past life experience.

Make sense?

No?

Then I've done my job.

64. Dunbar's 'weekly summary' (3/5)

A week of a lot of painful thinking and a stuffed up nose doesn't exactly encourage a sense of humor. I didn't think I had anything good enough to contribute to the weekly summary.

And, when I thought about it, I didn't care.

Completing a goal would have been nice, but I realized I had to concentrate on the school assignment and not on some goal on a list. In the end, it's not the finished goal that's important but what's learned in the attempt. (Cue the violin music)

On that note, I DID have several things mentioned on the summary so I'm good until the next week! There's even a mention of the bunny costume!

DUNBAR: I didn't put out a solution because I was worried that students would just look at what was done last year without thinking about it. This project requires a lot of painful thinking.

Student comment: And I agree with Prof. Dunbar. Thinking is painful.

*******

In the immortal words of Douglas Adams: "This must be Thursday. I never could get the hang of Thursdays."

*******

LOVE THOSE AWAY MESSAGES:

Auto Response from Student" (7:43:09 PM): No matter what you may think, D- I am NOT going to wear a bunny costume while doing tax work

*******

SHR: I did manage to complete what I could of the quiz (coffee is the greatest invention on earth).
WBR: No problem, we did not discuss much. Yes, I agree with the coffee. I drink it twice as much during a semester, which may not be very good for health, but it keeps me going :)

*******

I'm a little spiny with the caffeine and cold medicine currently cycling through my system at the present moment to a point where I think this question has a personal vendetta against me. I'll have to look this over later to thoroughly understand this problem.

64. Dunbar's 'weekly summary' (2/5)

Partnerships are hard.

And I don't mean the romantical union between two people (though that in itself is a hardship that many people have to endure. Like sand in socks or eating yellow cake).

I mean doing tax for business partnerships. Ack! If it wasn't for this need to "graduate", I'd be running for the hills right now.

So this week was a balance of trying to be amusing and trying NOT to sound dumb. The dumbness overcame and I was stuck with the professor trying to explain to me the BASICS of selling assets and receiving gains. This is stuff learned back in grade school! Needless to say, I spent a good time banging my head against the table, and banging my head against the wall, and against the laptop...

Headache is sure to come. I'd need to kill it with beer.

As for the weekly summary, it just popped up about an hour ago and disappointment was close. I was going through the list thinking I wasn't going to be on this week and then there goes my 101 list!! And then... right at the end-

And the best belly laugh of the week:

A student had the following away message:

***In the corner for giving a bad answer…***

DUNBAR (9:53:34 PM): You can come out of the corner now. All is forgiven.
SHR (9:54:14 PM): phew! I was getting hungry
SHR(9:54:26 PM): and I missed work
SHR(9:54:33 PM): ............. yeah..
SHR(9:56:20 PM): and you can explain to my boss why I had to stay in the corner all day cause my professor forgot about me!
DUNBAR (9:56:50 PM): can you hear me laughing?
SHR(9:57:23 PM): wait... one sec....
SHR(9:57:29 PM): yes! I think I can!
DUNBAR: sounds scary
SHR(9:57:48 PM): lol

She was saving the best for last!

Yes! I still got it!

78. Host 5 social gatherings - In progress (1/5)

October 26, 2008

I had my first party at my new place- A Halloween themed Partilite Party with expensive candles all arranged in a pretty Halloween fashion. It took me awhile to prepare with the cleaning and the prep work but it was a fun affair and I believe that everyone else had a good time too. . . I hope. . . Oh look! Pictures!!

49. Carve a jack-o-lantern - Completed

Completed October 25, 2008

Though I guess you could say this was completed on the 26th seeing that I was up until 3am with two pumpkins. One pumpkin had a simple design of a face from the kit I picked up at Walmart. I managed to finish that one within an hour.

This is either a confused looking pumpkin or it just had a stroke which might explain the droopy look. I can't decide.

The other one was a design of wolves. I like wolves so I thought 'why not give it a try?' Why not indeed... This was the one that took three hours and way into the night. It didn't turn out too bad:
So I give you one more completed task!

64. Dunbar's 'weekly summary' (1/5)

BTW, for the people that don't know, my MSA (Masters of Science in Accounting) program at the University of Connecticut is all on-line. All these interactions consist of AIMs, discussion boards, and chat rooms. All our learning material for this tax class are on an on-line "course portal." Some people that I've talked to about the program can't really imagine what it would be like to take all on-line courses but, after two years of doing this, I've gotten use to it. Now I have a hard time sitting in an actual classroom. Go figure.

This wasn't really my best week. On Sunday, I failed my midterm in my tax class which affected my mood for the rest of the week. I'll still be able to pull a "B" for the class but not without being really serious about my schoolwork for the rest of the semester. Also, someone from my group left the class and so we're short one person help with the homework.

But I sill managed to make Prof. Dunbar laugh. Here's what she added to her weekly summary:

WEB> it's fall & windy out...
MYA> it is! very cold too
WEB> yep
MYA> I want to burn furniture
WEB> why?
MYA> to stay warm
MYA> or aspiring arsonist
WEB> lucky you can't burn the tax class material
MYA> you choose
MYA> the laptop I suppose
WEB> the material will still be on the portal :)

*******

WEB> btw, have you taken a look at the project?
MYA> is it up?
WEB> yep
MYA> then no
WEB> looks pretty scary
MYA> must be Dunbar's sick way of celebrating halloween
WEB> lol...

26. Volunteer (1/12) - In Progress

The idea is simple enough. Volunteer for a good cause (X12). I would want to do more but with my schedule, it hasn't been easy. Still, it's no excuse.

Last Sunday (10/19/08) I did volunteer work by helping my church with the annual CROP (Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty) walk. It's a six mile walk to raise money and help feed the hungry. I was in charge of putting up the route signs, running around in case anyone needed help, and getting the signs down. Sadly, I didn't get the chance to walk (though I did probably more than two miles getting those signs up and down).

The day was very nice for a walk and, though it was hard work, I think it was a success.

Poor dad got "volunteered" to help as crossing guard.

He probably didn't expect to spend his Sunday this way, but he worked just as hard as the rest of us. Gotta give him props for that.

83. See a wolf - Completed

Another one finished in 24 hours. I'm on a roll!

This was a presentation done at my mother's library from a wolf conservation center. Seeing as how I've shown an interest in wolves, my mother got me a ticket.

I have to say, It - was - awesome!

Who's afraid of the big bad wolf? (*cough* I'll stop)

Yes, this went on my list in anticipation of going to this event, but it's one of those things where I would have always wanted to do it but had no thought in the possibility of it actually happening. Wolves aren't native in these parts (I don't think I'd want to see one in the wild anyways!) and they are always shy creatures at zoo exhibits. So would I go if there's a chance to see a wolf up close? Of course!

awww.....

For anyone interested, the presenters were from the Wolf Conservation Center in South Salem, NY -- www.nywolf.org

45. Eat at a diner after 2am - Completed!

October 18, 2008

My first task is complete! It's a happy dance time for me!

After a few drinks at happy hour with a couple people from work, Andriana and I headed over to the Casino to do some gamble and hit the bars. We didn't stay at the bars long, but I did manage to win about $50 at the wheel of fortune table. :-)

So it's about 2am by the time we got back and what better way to end the night than at a diner? I never had a gyro before and it was good! I woke up the next morning hungover and in pain, but it was a good night.

13. Get my MSA

Honestly, this task is a gimme. I have every expectation to graduate this December.

Even if I have to trick the guy with the diploma (look over there! Swipe!)...

But after all the work and stress (stressing the stress) and money that went into this endeavor, I attend to have great satisfaction in crossing this particular item off my list.

64. Be on Dunbar's 'weekly summary' for the rest of the semester - In Progress

Some people might have some questions on the items on my list. Some people are making me want toast. I just went shopping too. No bread. Drat.

So there are going to be some random posts on the list and the progress I'm making with them. First up- the weekly summary.

Tax is tough. It requires work and, well, who wants to work? But this is the best class in the MSA program since Prof Dunbar makes the class interesting. One of the things she does every week is post the jokes and funny quirks that people say in discussion boards and chat rooms. As you may know, I can be funny (no laughing, I can be!).

Here's what she's posted so far (can you guess which one I am?):

MRY > blah, brain's full
WEB> I don't know about you, but everytime I am about to do the quiz, I feel like I'm about to enter a very dark cave and won't be able to get out until hours later
MRY > get some rope and go spelunking

GREAT AWAY MESSAGE
“Taxing work is being done.”

MRY > I'm good with same time, same place
MRY > different wine bottle
WEB> haha.. what's your favorite wine?
MRY > whatever's on tap

SHR> WBR has a different answer for 11.2
SCL > Ops, you are right
WBR > i seem to be the target tonight :)
SCL > We'll be gentle : )
WBR > thanks... :)
SHR> someone as to be. You were nice enough to finish on time...
SHR> lol
WBR > you guys are always...
SHR> ?
WBR > always nice i meant
SHR> right...

WBR: Btw, this is only C-corp. Wait till we get to the partnership project... Dunbar saves the hardest for last.
Dunbar: shhhhhhhhhhhh, you are scaring them! Partnerships are the messiest - I agree.
WBR: Yes, it is. My husband and mother in-law are attorneys so they took partnership tax classes in law school. Both of them wished me luck on that part of tax :) I'm scared too... it's going to be a loooong Halloween. The good thing is that there are other students who are going through them with me and we (group 8) have each other. We'll go through the haunted house together :)
SHR: ::whimper:: I'm scared...
Dunbar: SHR, I doubt that you have ever been scared of anything in your life! ;-)
SHR: sure I'm scared of stuff! Things like spiders, tax, my genes when my dad is trying to be funny, the number eight (makes my accounting job difficult), the list goes on.
Dunbar: Did you get your sense of humor from your dad? ;-)
SHR: Sense of humor? I have no idea what you're talking about. I'm a completely serious person.

>Bed sounds like a good idea. Up there with sliced bread and duct tape.

Day Zero

If you look to the left (no, other left), I've compiled my 101 goals in 1001 days. Most anyways. The last five are open to those items I haven't thought of in the week I've been working on this list.

Day one is tomorrow.

What is 101/1001?

From DayZero:

The Mission:
Complete 101 preset tasks in a period of 1001 days.

The Criteria:
Tasks must be specific (ie. no ambiguity in the wording) with a result that is either measurable or clearly defined. Tasks must also be realistic and stretching (ie. represent some amount of work on my part).

Why 1001 Days?
Many people have created lists in the past - frequently simple goals such as New Year's resolutions. The key to beating procrastination is to set a deadline that is realistic. 1001 Days (about 2.75 years) is a better period of time than a year, because it allows you several seasons to complete the tasks, which is better for organising and timing some tasks such as overseas trips or outdoor activities.
